In Part 1 of this two part series. I carried out an overview of why ‘The Game of Life and How to play it’ by Florence Scovel Shinn is a life changing book. In the second part of this series, I will be giving you a analysis of two key concepts I took away from this short book. I plan to expand upon these concepts in future posts as they are two of the most important chapters in The Game of Life. These concepts regarding letting go of resistance are very beneficial. They give us a starting chance of creating lasting change in our lives if we apply them wholeheartedly. The chapter on ‘Casting the Burden’ teaches us how to begin the process of changing the way our mind operates. The ‘Law of Non Resistance’ teaches us to let go of control and to start living in the present.
The concepts also highlight how powerful our words and emotions are in helping us to create life we wish to be living. To implement the following concepts, a dose of willpower and discipline must be applied. But once you have applied discipline to the following ideas you will notice immediate changes. Once you notice changes being created, new habits of behaviour will be formed and you are on your way. Experience the power of casting out fear from the mind and dropping the need to be in control.
Casting the Burden – Impressing the Subconscious Mind
‘It seems almost impossible to make any headway directing the subconscious from the conscious, or reasoning mind, as the reasoning mind (the intellect) is limited in its conceptions, and filled with doubts and fears.’– Florence Scovel Shinn
I explained the importance of the subconscious mind in a previous post. But how you may ask, do we go about changing our subconscious beliefs about life? Our subconscious mind is very stubborn due to the fact it learns from repetition. The subconscious learns from our conscious thoughts and needs the right impetus to make changes. Trying to actively change ourselves through conscious thought is often futile and ineffective. We often find if we try to change or stop our thoughts that we don’t make any progress. There is a way around this though, the key is to begin making new impressions upon our mind. i.e. thinking more positive thoughts.
This is why the best way to impress the subconscious mind is by inputting positive data in and releasing the bad data. Many of our thoughts, feelings and emotions become heavy burdens that we carry with us throughout our daily lives. We may even want to change how we feel about ourselves but may not know where to start. We need to learn to become aware of these destructive thoughts and emotions logged deeply in our subconscious mind. By aiming to become aware of our baggage the impossible will become possible. We will begin to experience clarity and freedom from our fear filled minds.
‘When man knows his own powers and the workings of his mind, his great desire is to find an easy and quick way to impress the subconscious with good, for simply an intellectual knowledge of the Truth will not bring results.‘- Florence Scovel Shinn
By understanding the importance of our subconscious and how it is the silent controller of our mind. We then begin to understand the necessity of becoming aware of negativity and then we start the process of imprinting positive thoughts into our mind. We also regain power over our lives when we begin to do this. Understanding how the mind works though is not enough to change it. We must implement decisive action to create lasting changes. Shinn suggests affirmations as being our first step in doing this.
‘In steadily repeating the affirmation, “I cast this burden on the Christ within, and go free,” the vision clears, and with it a feeling of relief, and sooner or later comes the manifestation of good, be it health, happiness or supply.‘- Florence Scovel Shinn
Shinn explains the importance of releasing the burdens that haunt us on a daily basis through the use of simple affirmations. If we attach ourselves to the beliefs that our mind obsesses over. We are simply reinforcing the power of our negative thoughts and emotions. We must learn to question the negative thoughts that arise and then through the power of affirmation we can correct them. This requires discipline and will power to enforce but over time you will notice a shift in your thoughts and feelings about the world. Shinn gives us some simple affirmations to use when those negative and destructive thoughts arise within us. She explains in clear and concise terms, how we can begin the process of clearing the subconscious mind from all unwanted clutter and garbage thereby regaining our freedom back.
Her process involves offloading all of our ingrained negativity onto our superconsciousness. This is the spiritual level of our being. This spiritual level of our nature has the ability to cleanse us and allow us to be free of our negative belief systems. It could be also termed as our connection to God.
The Law of Non Resistance – Letting Go
‘Nothing on earth can resist an absolutely nonresistant person.’ – Florence Scovel Shinn
Trying to forcefully control life is a form of creating resistance in our lives. Control can come in many forms beyond simply trying to control the people around us. Control usually stems from the notion that we believe that we can’t have what we want in life unless we use brute force to make it happen. You must ask yourself a simple question. If you believed you could have the things you desired in life, would you need to be in control of the situations? I highly doubt it. Your positive beliefs would enable you to take a step back and let events enfold. You will begin to trust that your life will work out for the best without feeling you need to be in control.
One example of this kind of control is mentally deciding we want something and if we don’t get it we will be unhappy. You have by this very act created great resistance against getting it. We have decided that if we don’t get the thing we think we want, we will be desperately unhappy and angry. We are even predicting potential failure by thinking such a thing. By doing this you are potentially creating a bad outcome for yourself. Many grown adults become like screaming children when they don’t get the things they want in life.
The more we create these heavy emotions within us, the more resistance we build to actually getting what we want in life. If we learn to go with the flow and give up control. We often find abundance comes flowing into our lives without even trying. Sounds too simple does it not? It is only when you have experienced this occurring in your life that you can learn to accept it.
‘Resistance is Hell, for it places man in a “state of torment.”’- Florence Scovel Shinn
The more we become attached to outcomes, the more torment we bring upon ourselves when outcomes do not go the way we wish them to. The harsh reality is that we often get what we want by not actually craving it. Desperately wanting things or desiring things generally comes from a place of lack and belief within ourselves and creates the opposite of our intended desires. Creating resistance in our lives places us in a living hell of torment and misery that we find it hard to escape from as Shinn states here clearly. Living in hell is living in a state of resistance and proudly holding on to strong negative beliefs in the subconscious.
‘The robbers of time are the past and the future. Man should bless the past, and forget it, if it keeps him in bondage, and bless the future, knowing it has in store for him endless joys, but live fully in the now.‘ – Florence Scovel Shinn
We must learn to live fully in the present moment, not the past or future. The tormented person focuses all of their attention on past memories and replays them in the present moment. If your mind is focussed on past memories in the present, the precious present moment which creates your future will pass you by. Forgive the past and live in the present. Move on from the past and allow positive outcomes to occur in the present. Also understand that the present moment is shaping your future.
‘So long as man resists a situation, he will have it with him. If he runs away from it, it will run after him.‘ Florence Scovel Shinn
We need to focus on letting go of the situations in our life. If we continue to resist our lives and try to control outcomes. We will find ourselves constantly on the run from anything we don’t like the appearance of. The more we try to resist, the more we will be confronted with the issue we are running from. The key to becoming free again is by allowing life to flow freely and by letting go of the heavy baggage we are carrying.
By facing up to our problems and letting them go, we can free ourselves from the torment we experience. By letting go, we also then allow new positive outcomes to enter our lives. If we desperately resist and try to control our circumstances, we are holding on to them and creating more of the same. You can run but you can’t hide! Showing indifference to issues instead of running from them is a key to finding happiness and peace of mind.
I hope with this two part series I have explained why ‘The Game of Life’ needs a place on your bookshelf. It is a small, concise and highly inspiring book for every seeking mind on the planet. As previously stated, it could even be the only self-help book you may ever need to purchase.
